Infant Adoption
FAC initiated an infant adoption program in 1989 in order to provide specialized services to parents considering planning an adoption for a child. For the most part, this program serves pregnant women who are thinking about adoption planning for the children they are expecting. Therefore, we place primarily newborn infants in this program. Occasionally, we do work with parents considering adoption for a child or children whom they have been parenting and are older than newborn. This occurs rarely, so there are very few toddlers or pre-school children available for adoption. FAC’s infant adoptions are all the result of a choice by parents. When parents decide they cannot care for a child, they can voluntarily relinquish their legal rights as parents so the child can be adopted and raised in another family. We provide adoption counseling and services to all parents who request it. Therefore, children needing adoptive parents have varying racial/ethnic heritages, physical/mental/emotional characteristics, health status, etc. Birth parents may specify the type of parents they want to adopt their child and adoptive parents may specify the type of child they feel best able to parent. FAC assists both sets of parents in making the best match possible.
FAC can provide all of the services necessary to successfully complete an adoption, including pre-adoption education/counseling, adoption home study, assistance with identifying a child to adopt, assistance to birth parents to legally relinquish their parental rights, court processing to legally adopt a child, post-placement and post- adoption assistance. We will provide home study and post-placement services if you are working with an attorney, facilitator or other agency for placement of a child. We have worked cooperatively with other professionals to assist many families adopt a baby.
We will assist you to explore all of your options so that you have the best chance to be successful in achieving your goal of adopting a child. FAC’s staff has many years of experience in working with birth parents searching for a family to adopt their child and with individuals and couples seeking to adopt a child.
